Find 4 Plus Tutors at Dukes Tutoring.

Preparation for the 4 Plus is based on the EYFS curriculum. This means that although reading, writing and maths are assessed, physical development, personal, social and emotional development, and communication and language, are also key.

There is also a large focus on looking for a student’s learning potential through what are called the ‘Characteristics of Effective Learning’: curiosity, engagement, motivation, sustained concentration, autonomy and creating and thinking critically. These areas are assessed by making observations of the child’s behaviour and the skills they are demonstrating alongside their peers within an Early Years environment. Although this observed interaction is often called a 4 Plus group interview, children of this age rarely, if ever, face a classic interview situation.

Our 4 Plus tutors are Early Years specialists with years of experience. They take a gentle, nurturing approach to building your child’s skills and preparing them for their first experience of assessment.

4 Plus Mock Assessment

In addition to our 4 Plus tutoring, we also offer a 4 Plus mock assessment. This replicates what your child will experience in the real 4 Plus. After the assessment, we provide you with a detailed, personal feedback report to help you with your planning and preparation.

  1. 4 Plus Group Mock Assessment Session – 1.5 Hours

The group 4 Plus mock assessment session takes place at Dukes House, in a classroom environment set up, with up to four other children of the same age and is primarily to assess the EYFS Prime Areas of Learning. Teachers will assess each individual child against the curriculum through interaction with the students and making observations.

  2. Individual Mock Assessment Session – 30 minutes

Following the group assessment, a 1:1 session held at the Dukes House. It is conducted by an EYFS specialist who will assess the student’s current ability in the EYFS Specific Areas of Learning through a series of planned activities. The areas of learning assessed will include language, fine motor skills, reading, writing, number, shape, space and measure.

  3. The Report

This includes a detailed written report and a 30-minute telephone feedback session.

The written report will highlight areas of particular strength and the areas that need developing in order for the student to demonstrate age related expectation at the time of the 4 Plus assessment. It will also provide suggestions as to how the parents can support their child in reaching these expectations and the resources they can use.

The 4 Plus is used by selective pre-prep schools (or prep schools with a pre-prep attached), to assess children for entry into Reception.

The 4 Plus assessment touches on areas from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. These include reading, writing and maths, as well as physical development, personal/social/emotional development, communication & language and the “Characteristics of Effective Learning” (curiosity, engagement, motivation, sustained concentration, creating and thinking critically).

If you are aiming for your child to attend a school where the 4 Plus assessment is used, preparing them for what to expect is important to build their confidence before being placed in an unfamiliar test environment.
Some parents choose to work with a 4 Plus tutor to help with this process. Our tutors are Early Years specialists who can gently work on the skills which schools assess. Tutoring is fun, playful, and nurturing.

If your child sits one of our 4 Plus mock assessments, you will receive a detailed written report on their current level, areas of strength, and any areas to work on before the real 4 Plus. You will also have a 30-minute conversation with the assessor, one of our EYFS experts.

Our 4 Plus tutors are Early Years specialists with years of tutoring experience. They are used to working with very young children and take a gentle and nurturing approach to the tuition – emphasising learning through play in order to gradually build up the skills needed at 4 Plus.
