The Dukes Tutoring Approach to the GCSEs

GCSEs are a vital staging post on a child’s educational journey. Nowadays, they are often the only official public exam results available when a student applies to university. This means getting the best grades possible is more important than ever.

At the same time, GCSEs are also children’s first experience of public exams. This unfamiliarity can breed stress and worsen their feelings of pressure – as well as lead to avoidable exam technique mistakes that can cost them the grades they deserve.

At Dukes Tutoring, we have a team of hundreds of highly qualified GCSE tutors across all major subjects and exam boards. Only a small fraction of the tutors who apply to join us are accepted due to our rigorous vetting and selection process.

When a family enquires about GCSE tutoring with us, we like to begin with an initial consultation in which we learn more about the child, their requirements, and how they learn best. Then we personally match them the best-fit tutor for their requirements.

Our tutors cover the entire curriculum, zeroing in on their students’ knowledge gaps. Nearer the exams, they provide revision and exam technique support, which often make the decisive difference in their tutee’s performance. The whole process is overseen by our dedicated Head of Secondary provision, who regularly checks in with the family and the tutor to monitor each student’s progress.

Flexible Tutoring

Dukes Tutoring also offers flexibility in how much tutoring you need:

  • Do you want a GCSE tutor on a long-term basis to support you throughout the course, perhaps weekly or fortnightly?
  • Do you just want a short-term tutor before your mock or real GCSE exams to help with revision?
  • Do you need tutoring sessions during a school holiday, so you don’t slip backwards whilst not in lessons, or to troubleshoot GCSE topics you have struggled with during the previous term?

All these options are available to you as part of our bespoke tutoring service. Many of our students keep up with their learning via online tutoring when away for some time, for example during summer and Easter breaks. Pre-organised sessions help students stay on track and keep up with their studies and their GCSE revision, even when out of the country or on holiday.

What should I look for in a GCSE tutor?

There are many GCSE private tutors available, so how do you know which tutor is right for you? Here are some of the essential skills and prerequisites you should look for in a GCSE tutor:

  • Previous experience with GCSE or IGCSE exam criteria for AQA, OCR (including Salters) and Edexcel
  • Previous experience and proven success teaching your required subject at GCSE
  • Familiarity with the exam board
  • Genuine teaching ability
  • An engaging and enthusiastic teaching style

Support for GCSE options

Deciding which GCSEs to take is a difficult process and as with the choices of sixth form and university subjects and destinations, expert advice can help clarify the implications of each option. We help students to see how particular GCSEs can get to where they want to be and which subject combinations would work best to open up their options and prepare them for sixth form and university choices.

After GCSES

For those considering a move to a different school or a college to continue their studies into the sixth form, we also have bespoke advice and support available from our expert Consultant for Sixth Form Admissions.

There are many factors to consider with the transition from GCSE to an A Level or vocational course. It is important to research and ask the right questions at this time, as with any educational decision, and that is where our expert advice can really help.

This is frequently decisive in helping children achieve or exceed their ambitions at GCSE.

  • Proven GCSE success

We’ve been tutoring students for their GCSEs for decades. Every year, we help our tutees achieve outstanding GCSE results. Our intervention often makes the difference in a child’s performance. Then, once the GCSE tutoring is underway, our dedicated Head of Secondary Provision will check in with you regularly, providing progress updates and ensuring that your child’s learning is on track. In the unlikely event that you are unhappy with your GCSE tutor, we will find you a replacement as a priority.

Our GCSE tutors are available in person in central London or for online tutoring anywhere in the world. This gives families access to the highest standards of tuition, wherever you are based.

We entrusted Dukes Tutoring with our child’s GCSE preparation for two years, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results.  The tutors were excellent—knowledgeable, patient, and incredibly understanding. They consistently checked in with us to monitor our child’s progress, which made us feel supported throughout the journey. We’ve just received the GCSE results, and our child has truly excelled.

GCSE tutoring is designed to provide students in Years 10 and 11 with personalised academic support to help them excel in their GCSE exams. It’s ideal for students who want to strengthen their understanding of specific subjects, boost their grades, or build confidence in their academic abilities.

Subjects include Maths, English, Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Humanities, Languages, Social Sciences and more. Our GCSE tutors are familiar with major exam boards such as AQA, Edexcel, OCR and CIE.
