“I’ve been tutoring for 6 years, mainly the 11+ process. I’ve had great success by sparking passion in my students, making lessons fun and engaging (even for students who actively express a hatred of the subject!) to encourage them to take ownership of their studies and by developing a friendly, yet firm, rapport. I introduce new topics through demonstration, guided practice, then independent work, checking confidence out of 10 before moving on. My lessons are tailored to each student’s pace and learning style, consolidating core skills while pushing them beyond. I teach all 11+ subjects, including interview technique, with a particular passion for English. As a professional writer in an advertising agency, I bring skills I have learnt professionally, promoting clarity, succinctness, and storytelling, in my teaching.”

“With 25 years of Primary Teaching experience, plus Montessori Teaching experience I have taught young children how to read and write in English, by using a comprehensive phonics program. I have taught older children creative writing and how to use interesting vocabulary in their work to challenge and extend them further. “I have extensive experience in education having taught for over 25 years as a class teacher, Assistant Head and Deputy Head Teacher in outstanding primary schools in Norfolk, London and Cheshire. Also, I was Head of Schools, Head of Learning and Head of Dukes Tutoring; however, I now focus solely on tutoring. I am meticulous and take pride in creating structured lessons to match each of my student’s potential. Lesson feedback is both thorough and personal, inspiring students to meet achievable goals, involving them in setting their own academic targets. I am enthusiastic and highly committed, building professional relationships with my students and their families. I also act as an education consultant for Dukes Tutoring, conducting many academic assessment reviews and guidance, as well as interview preparation for secondary schools. Music is my passion, and I am a skilled pianist, a keen songwriter and a member of a local community choir. I love both attending and performing in concerts as well as regular trips to the theatre.”

“I have been a primary school teacher for over 30 years, working in state schools across London. I ensure my lessons are pacy and involve a range of active learning tasks. I use Project-Based Learning projects to help transform students’ interests into academic excellence and long-term skill development. I empower students through scaffolded instruction by transitioning from direct modelling to independent mastery. I keep students engaged through interactive checkpoints that break down complex topics into manageable chunks. My lessons conclude with an application challenge, turning new knowledge into a skill students can use straight away.”

“With over 16 years of experience as both a classroom teacher and one-to-one tutor, I am dedicated to fostering a supportive and trusting learning environment where children feel motivated to pursue their goals and explore their learning potential. It is a privilege to tailor learning to each student’s individual needs, and I take great pride in helping children grow into confident, enthusiastic learners who think independently, work creatively and enjoy the process of problem-solving. I specialise in all subjects for the 11+ and have experience preparing students for the 7+, 8+, and 10+ exams. Over the years, I have guided many children toward securing places at some of the country’s top independent and grammar schools. “Having worked as a classroom teacher for more than thirty years – including roles as diverse as Head of English, Head of PHSE and Head of Religious Studies. I joined the Dukes Tutoring team as a private tutor more than ten years ago. Over time, my role with Dukes Tutoring expanded and I became the examiner for 11+ English mock exams: this has seen me both writing and marking these exams. I have also run numerous workshops in both English and maths for 7+ and 11+ students. I pride myself on having a 100% success record for my 11+ students being offered a place in one of their schools of choice. Outside of my professional role with Dukes Tutoring, I am a qualified teacher of both ballet and tap dancing and attend classes twice a week. And I am passionate about Fiat 500 cars – having never owned any other car in my life!”

“I am an experienced and approachable maths tutor with a background in both state and prep schools, specialising in 11+, 13+, and GCSE maths. I began my career in primary education, which helped me develop patience, adaptability, and the skills to support students with a wide range of learning needs. Moving into London prep schools strengthened my subject knowledge and gave me a clear understanding of what competitive entrance exams require. Even after more than a decade as an educator, my approach remains holistic: rather than focusing solely on past papers, I help students build a deep understanding of each topic and develop confidence in problem-solving and reasoning. I have supported students in gaining places at schools such as Alleyn’s, JAGS, Dulwich College, Highgate, and Whitgift. More recently, I have helped several Dukes students secure offers from Westminster, City of London, and Habs, with some receiving scholarships. I have also guided pupils through the Primary Maths Challenge and UKMT, with many achieving Gold Awards and progressing to the Bonus Round. Many families choose to continue lessons beyond exams, as their children enjoy the sessions and make consistent progress. I aim to create a calm, supportive learning environment where every student feels comfortable asking questions, challenging themselves, and growing in confidence.”

“I have taught and tutored Maths and Physics for 15 years and Computer Science for the last five years, working across a wide range of settings from state and independent schools in the UK to British international schools in Spain and Thailand. I believe all students want to succeed, but many simply need guidance with the skills and methods needed to achieve their full potential. This is where my experience as a teacher, former head of department and examiner for two exam boards adds great value to our tutoring sessions. I have also prepared students for entrance exams at 11+, 13+ and 16+ and as an Oxford alumni myself, I have also helped with application and interview preparation for Oxbridge candidates. Outside of teaching and tutoring, I love to travel and have visited over 60 countries, with a few more still on my bucket list!”

“I have always loved maths, and I bring that enthusiasm into every lesson. My approach is flexible, as each student has their own unique personality, preferred learning style, strengths, and areas for improvement. That said, maths is ultimately a practical subject. Unlike many other subjects, it cannot be mastered through rote learning and book work alone. It is essential that students practise applying concepts and methods across a wide range of problem-solving situations. In addition to learning the methods themselves, students must also develop an intuition for when and how to use them, particularly in the more unorthodox situations that can arise in examination questions. As such, my default approach is to place a strong emphasis on past paper and exam-style questions, while giving students the opportunity to attempt problems independently before I step in with guidance and advice. When gaps in a student’s understanding become apparent, I engage in deeper work on the relevant material in order to strengthen their understanding before returning to question practice. I also emphasise the importance of good exam technique and time management. Above all, I ensure that lessons remain supportive and encouraging, so that students feel comfortable asking questions and fully engaging with the learning process. ”

“I have been a private tutor for over 10 years, beginning as a volunteer in a local SEN provision and going on to work with children, young people, and families internationally. I specialise in English and the humanities, from the building blocks of reading to A level. I aim to create a participatory learning environment where students take an active role in shaping their sessions. Through discussion and collaboration, I find students retain more knowledge and develop a stronger sense of ownership over their learning. I place a strong emphasis on critical thinking, whilst also building the study and organisational skills vital to academic success. I am experienced in supporting a wide range of learners, from those who struggle with traditional education to those with high academic enthusiasm. My studies in child development and educational psychology have supported me to develop effective teaching methods across diverse needs. I have also spent significant time working with families on residential tutoring placements, which have provided me with a unique opportunity to deepen my understanding of holistic education. I frequently incorporate creative and play‑based activities into my sessions, particularly with younger learners or those who benefit from multisensory, movement‑based, or imaginative approaches. I speak several languages and have taught English as a foreign language, and enjoy supporting students for whom English is an additional language. I believe that building confidence, self-efficacy and self-esteem is just as valuable as learning the curriculum and my students finish our sessions with confidence, direction, and purpose – for exams and beyond!”

“I am an English Teacher with over 20 years of tutoring experience mainly in the private sector. My teaching approach is a traditional one of using worksheets, practice books and past exam papers. I also use online materials, so my students are kept up to date with their subject knowledge. I encourage my students to have autonomy in their learning by getting them to bring their knowledge of sports, reading, and music into their creative writing tasks. I also help students with language skills by using dictionaries and helping to create their own personal vocabulary notebooks. To monitor their exam progress, I use past exam papers to consolidate the work we have completed and provide the students with revision tasks to increase their overall grades. I have supported students with entrance exams into Latymer, St Pauls and Westminster, as well as many grammar schools.”

“My math teaching philosophy emphasises concepts over memorisation. I enjoy working with a wide range of students, from those aspiring to math competitions and advanced secondary classes, to those who find math difficult. For those who already enjoy math, I teach how to improvise mathematically, to adapt to a variety of situations given fixed parameters in a confined universe. For those who find themselves struggling with math, I aim to connect everyday concepts to abstract mathematical ones as a strategy to build their mathematical confidence. I believe math is accessible to all, and patience and persistence can bring any student up to speed. ”

“I have been teaching chemistry for over 30 years, with most of that time as head of department in a large mixed secondary school. I am very familiar with the AQA, OCR and Edexcel exam boards and also have a lot of experience preparing students for tests beyond A Level such as the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge and the RSC Chemistry Olympiad. For several years I was part of the AQA A Level practical exam writing team. As a sixth form tutor I helped countless students with their UCAS applications and am more than happy to give advice on the writing of personal statements, particularly those for medicine and other courses that require science A Levels. I put a lot of effort into preparing individual lessons for my tutees and welcome the opportunity to set and assess extra work for my students if so desired. I have a huge bank of resources gathered over my teaching career to help students understand and revise this challenging subject. I absolutely love teaching chemistry and see it as a privilege to be able to work alongside students to allow them to gain the confidence and skills necessary to achieve their own success. ”

“I am a passionate Computing specialist with a background in full-stack software development and cloud infrastructure, bringing real-world industry expertise into the classroom. My teaching philosophy centres on project-based learning and student autonomy; I want my lessons to be as interactive as possible, especially when tackling complex, abstract concepts like computer networking or data representation. I utilize a collaborative approach to coding, often sharing environments to model best practices and troubleshoot in real time. By embedding coding environments directly into my teaching resources, I ensure my students stay engaged and take ownership of their technical journey.”

Book ConsultationThe Benefits of Online Tutoring
Although some families prefer in-person tuition (which we are more than happy to arrange in central London), many prefer online lessons for a variety of reasons:
-
No geographical limits
Our online tutoring is available to students based anywhere in the world. In an online classroom, your child can be taught Dukes Tutoring’s exceptional tutors no matter where you live. You can learn more about our online tutoring for international students here.
-
Flexibility
Online lessons are easy and convenient to arrange – and with no travel time for the tutor to factor in, often easier to re-arrange than in person. If your child is away from home for a time, switching lessons to online ensures continuity of tuition and maintains their progress.
-
Access to the best tutors
Online lessons offer the most flexibility for tutors as well as students. This means that a tutor who may not be available for in-person lessons in your area is available online, giving you access to the widest pool of the best possible tutors for your child.
