I have been tutoring since 2017 and I teach Politics, History, Theology, Geography and Law, from the early prep years right through to degree level. My approach is built around the essay: I want students to leave a session able to hold an argument in their head, defend it, and see where it is weakest. I rarely lecture. Instead I ask questions, hand the student the pen, and get them explaining the material back to me, because I have found that a student who can teach a topic is a student who will not forget it under exam pressure. With younger children, the work looks different and I enjoy it just as much. I do a great deal of foundational work with pre-prep and prep age pupils: handwriting and presentation, reading comprehension, building vocabulary, and the first steps of writing a paragraph that actually answers the question. For 11+ and 13+ pupils I cover the humanities and English side of the syllabus alongside interview preparation and confidence building, and I make it playful where I can, because a nervous ten year old learns nothing. At GCSE, A Level and IB, I focus on source handling, structure and precision of language, and I mark work in detail so students can see exactly where marks are won and lost. I also teach undergraduate students and currently lecture Land Law to Graduate Diploma in Law students at City, University of London, so I am comfortable stretching the strongest candidates well beyond their syllabus. Alongside academic tuition I mentor Oxbridge applicants, and I coach sailing at university level, which keeps me honest about the fact that good coaching is mostly good listening.

Experience

Alexander is a Cambridge educated tutor who has been teaching privately since 2017, covering Politics, History, Theology, Geography and Law from pre-prep through to degree level. He read Human, Social and Political Sciences at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge, where he graduated with a First and won the College Prize for the highest mark in his subject, before completing an MPhil in Political Thought and Intellectual History at Cambridge as a Cambridge Trust Scholar. He then took the Graduate Diploma in Law at City, University of London, achieving a Distinction as an Inner Temple Exhibition Scholar, and is currently on the Bar Course. He teaches at university level as a Visiting Lecturer at City, University of London, where he lectures Land Law to Graduate Diploma in Law students, leads seminars, marks papers and gives individual legal feedback. He has also taught degree level International Relations, Politics, Sociology and Political Theory to undergraduates from the Universities of Cambridge, Durham and Westminster. Alexander works extensively with younger pupils as well as senior candidates. With pre-prep and prep age children he builds the foundations: handwriting and presentation, reading comprehension, vocabulary and the structure of a first written argument, alongside History, Geography and Religious Studies at Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3. He has prepared pupils for 11+ examinations, all of whom gained places at their first choice schools, and he continues to teach humanities and English at 11+ and 13+ level. He is a premium Oxbridge Admissions Tutor and has coached over forty students through Oxbridge interview preparation in Human, Social and Political Sciences, History, Politics, Philosophy and Economics, Philosophy, Theology, Law, Sociology, Anthropology and Geography. He runs the Oxbridge admissions programme at Bartholomew School, and mentors state school applicants through Zero Gravity, the platform connecting state educated students with university mentors for Oxbridge and Russell Group applications. Outside the classroom he coaches sailing for United Kingdom university teams, including the University of Birmingham and the University of Nottingham, tailoring sessions to each squad's needs.
