I have been teaching History for 23 years, 17 of them as Head of History, and I have also served as Head of School. Over that time I have taught extensively across the independent and state sectors, and I am familiar with all the major examination boards. I taught GCSE with consistently strong exam results at St Catherine's, where I achieved a record of three consecutive years of 100% A*–B, at both GCSE and A Level. I believe History should be taught as a living, argued subject rather than a list of dates to memorise, and I encourage students to build their own historical judgement through evidence and debate. I enjoy tailoring my teaching to each student, and I am always keen to bring in wider reading and context to make the subject come alive.

Experience

Dean has 23 years of experience as a History teacher and a History tutor, 17 of them as Head of History, and has also served as Head of School. He is familiar with all the major examination boards, including AQA, Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas. His results-driven approach has produced strong outcomes throughout his career: at Raynes Park High School he raised GCSE History results from 46% to 64% A*–C, and at St Catherine's School he sustained 100% A*–B results for three consecutive years at both GCSE and A Level. Hoe Bridge is a prep school, so Dean is familiar with both Common Entrance and Scholarship papers. Dean was also awarded a GTC Scotland commendation placing him in the top 7% of teachers nationally. Dean has held Head of History posts at Bayliss Court, Earlston High School (Scotland), Glebelands, Hampshire Collegiate School, Hoe Bridge School, Raynes Park High School, and St Catherine's School (Twickenham), as well as senior leadership roles including Head of Upper School and Head of School.
