I am a Mathematics graduate and tutor, and Maths is the subject I specialise in. I have been tutoring for more than ten years and spent three years teaching Maths in the classroom. I work from upper primary through to A Level. A large part of my week is GCSE and A Level Maths, but I also do a lot of 11+ and 13+ entrance work and English tuition. For GCSE and A Level, I can work with AQA, Pearson Edexcel and WJEC/Eduqas specifications. I do not use exactly the same approach with every pupil. I normally start by seeing what they can already do and where the mistakes begin. In Maths, I explain the method, work through an example with them, and then get them doing the questions themselves. I use past papers regularly with exam students, especially once the basic method is there. I am happy to slow a topic down if the foundations are missing, but I also enjoy pushing stronger pupils into harder, unfamiliar questions. For entrance exams, I prepare for the school rather than giving every pupil the same generic 11+ work. I have worked on bespoke papers and interviews for Harrow School, Merchant Taylors' School, Radley College, Rugby School and Westminster School, as well as ISEB-style work, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning.

In Maths, Neil spends a lot of time on the working as well as the final answer. He checks algebra carefully, expects units and notation to be correct, and makes sure pupils can recognise the same topic when it appears in a less familiar question. Once a method is understood, he moves quickly into past-paper questions. With stronger pupils, he is comfortable going beyond routine exercises and using harder problems. Homework normally follows directly from the lesson so that the next session can start from what the pupil actually found difficult. Neil has taught online for several years and is used to working with families in the UK and overseas. He keeps parent communication simple: what was covered, what went well, what still needs work and what comes next. His English-language teaching includes EAL/ESL, IELTS and Cambridge English Advanced (CAE).
