I have a diverse academic journey that encompasses both state-funded and independent education as well as two world-class Russell Group universities. First, I completed my GCSEs from a comprehensive school and secured six 9s and five 8s. As my school did not offer lessons for Further Maths GCSE, I taught myself the course from scratch. For sixth form, I applied to St. Paul's School to experience an environment that would challenge me academically beyond the confines of the curriculum. For my A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and French, I achieved A* A* A* A. My university studies in maths include a BA in Mathematics from Merton College, University of Oxford and an MSc in Financial Mathematics from Queen Mary, University of London. Additionally, I have a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics from Goldsmiths, University of London. Regarding my teaching and tutoring experience, I have been an online Mathematics tutor since January 2022 for students across all ages in secondary school and sixth form. During my PGCE, I spent the 2024-25 academic year in two schools, where I gained expert guidance in lesson-planning, marking papers and pedagogy, among others. Spending time in state-funded and independent schools, both as a student and a teacher, has given me a well-rounded view of mathematics education and I hope to bring my approach to students with varying levels and enthusiasms. My sessions have covered a range of maths, including GCSE, A Level and Oxbridge admissions. I have guided many students meticulously through exam technique, all of whom were shortlisted for the interview stage for which I coached them further by providing mock interviews. I enjoy sharing my love of maths with others, particularly in order to show them that maths doesn't need to be as intimidating and unintuitive as it is often made out to be! When going through a problem with a student I walk them through each step of the problem and its concepts, so they get to apply what I've shown them in future problems, even when I'm not around. I frequently check in with my students to make sure they understand the conceptual details of what I am teaching them. Each lesson is tailored to each student so that they can get the most out of me in each lesson and time is spent productively.

Experience

Shaunak is a passionate mathematician and an enthusiastic tutor, with over 5 years’ experience in GCSE and A Level private mathematics tuition and a year teaching in the classroom of a top independent London day school. He has a degree in mathematics from Merton College, University of Oxford and a PGCE + QTS in Secondary Mathematics from Goldsmiths, University of London. He prides himself on helping his students understand why a concept is true, through his thorough and detailed understanding of the curriculum, rather than simply teaching to the exam. He enjoys working with students efficiently and effectively to achieve their academic goals. He also tutors the mathematical side of 11+, 13+ and 16+, as well as non-verbal reasoning for 11+, bringing the same drive to hone conceptual understanding. His success schools for 16+ in particular are Haberdashers’ Boys and Westminster. Furthermore, Shaunak is an expert in Oxbridge admissions for mathematics, providing personal statement guidance, admissions-test preparation and mock interviews throughout his tutoring career. He has coached numerous students for admissions to study Mathematics with an 85% success rate. Additionally, he has significant experience in tutoring for competition maths, including the UKMT Maths Challenges and Olympiads. Shaunak enjoys exploring new and interesting concepts with especially curious students, to challenge them beyond the confines of the curriculum. With more nervous students, he makes sure to guide them with the same high expectations and enthusiasm, particularly to show them that maths doesn't need to be as intimidating and unintuitive as it is often made out to be.
