"I have always loved maths, and I bring that enthusiasm into every lesson. My approach is flexible, as each student has their own unique personality, preferred learning style, strengths, and areas for improvement. That said, maths is ultimately a practical subject. Unlike many other subjects, it cannot be mastered through rote learning and book work alone. It is essential that students practise applying concepts and methods across a wide range of problem-solving situations. In addition to learning the methods themselves, students must also develop an intuition for when and how to use them, particularly in the more unorthodox situations that can arise in examination questions. As such, my default approach is to place a strong emphasis on past paper and exam-style questions, while giving students the opportunity to attempt problems independently before I step in with guidance and advice. When gaps in a student’s understanding become apparent, I engage in deeper work on the relevant material in order to strengthen their understanding before returning to question practice. I also emphasise the importance of good exam technique and time management. Above all, I ensure that lessons remain supportive and encouraging, so that students feel comfortable asking questions and fully engaging with the learning process. "

"I am an English Teacher with over 20 years of tutoring experience mainly in the private sector. My teaching approach is a traditional one of using worksheets, practice books and past exam papers. I also use online materials, so my students are kept up to date with their subject knowledge. I encourage my students to have autonomy in their learning by getting them to bring their knowledge of sports, reading, and music into their creative writing tasks. I also help students with language skills by using dictionaries and helping to create their own personal vocabulary notebooks. To monitor their exam progress, I use past exam papers to consolidate the work we have completed and provide the students with revision tasks to increase their overall grades."

"I have been a primary school teacher for over 30 years, working in state schools across London. I ensure my lessons are pacy and involve a range of active learning tasks. I use Project-Based Learning projects to help transform students' interests into academic excellence and long-term skill development. I empower students through scaffolded instruction by transitioning from direct modelling to independent mastery. I keep students engaged through interactive checkpoints that break down complex topics into manageable chunks. My lessons conclude with an application challenge, turning new knowledge into a skill students can use straight away."

"I’ve been tutoring for 6 years, mainly the 11+ process. I’ve had great success by sparking passion in my students, making lessons fun and engaging (even for students who actively express a hatred of the subject!) to encourage them to take ownership of their studies and by developing a friendly, yet firm, rapport. I introduce new topics through demonstration, guided practice, then independent work, checking confidence out of 10 before moving on. My lessons are tailored to each student’s pace and learning style, consolidating core skills while pushing them beyond. I teach all 11+ subjects, including interview technique, with a particular passion for English. As a professional writer in an advertising agency, I bring skills I have learnt professionally, promoting clarity, succinctness, and storytelling, in my teaching."

"My math teaching philosophy emphasises concepts over memorisation. I enjoy working with a wide range of students, from those aspiring to math competitions and advanced secondary classes, to those who find math difficult. For those who already enjoy math, I teach how to improvise mathematically, to adapt to a variety of situations given fixed parameters in a confined universe. For those who find themselves struggling with math, I aim to connect everyday concepts to abstract mathematical ones as a strategy to build their mathematical confidence. I believe math is accessible to all, and patience and persistence can bring any student up to speed. "

"I possess a Masters Degree in MSc By Research in Analytical Chemistry. My Bachelors Degree is in Applied Chemistry. Both qualifications were achieved at the University of Greenwich, which had the 3rd best Chemistry school in the UK at the time. I have been a private tutor since 2000. I have continued to teach in schools from 2004-2006. This includes being the Head of Mathematics and also Head of Science. My teaching philosophy is to engage and make the student(s) interactive in learning, thus as to meet their individual learning needs. I have developed my own initial assessments(IA), diagnostic assessments(DA), individual learning plans (ILPs), schemes of work(SOW), self review and self reflection. I have even on occasions revisited reviews to ensure learners needs are not only highlighted but also administered. This results in achieving higher grades for the learner. I utilise my spare time by attending educational courses so as to develop and nurture my own educational skills. I ensure all basis of communications are covered ie reading, writing, listening, speaking, gesturing etc. I incorporate active Q&A sessions with learners encouraging communication skills and allowing learners to self develop and blossom, especially in characteristics such as self confidence. I encourage and use Internet tools to aid further independent learning and achievements. All the above, results in successfully attaining higher and acceptable grading for the learners. "

"I have been a private tutor for over 10 years, beginning as a volunteer in a local SEN provision and going on to work with children, young people, and families internationally. I specialise in English and the humanities, from the building blocks of reading to A level. I aim to create a participatory learning environment where students take an active role in shaping their sessions. Through discussion and collaboration, I find students retain more knowledge and develop a stronger sense of ownership over their learning. I place a strong emphasis on critical thinking, whilst also building the study and organisational skills vital to academic success. I am experienced in supporting a wide range of learners, from those who struggle with traditional education to those with high academic enthusiasm. My studies in child development and educational psychology have supported me to develop effective teaching methods across diverse needs. I have also spent significant time working with families on residential tutoring placements, which have provided me with a unique opportunity to deepen my understanding of holistic education. I frequently incorporate creative and play‑based activities into my sessions, particularly with younger learners or those who benefit from multisensory, movement‑based, or imaginative approaches. I speak several languages and have taught English as a foreign language, and enjoy supporting students for whom English is an additional language. I believe that building confidence, self-efficacy and self-esteem is just as valuable as learning the curriculum and my students finish our sessions with confidence, direction, and purpose - for exams and beyond!"

"I believe that learning should be fun and engaging at its very heart, therefore I place a great importance on getting to know what makes my tutees tick so that I can design lessons which pique their intellectual curiosity and make it fun for them to learn. There are many ways to teach the same concept, and I see it as my role as a tutor to understand what my tutees both want and need, and to create a welcoming and judgement-free zone in which they can flourish. A big part of my teaching practice is building confidence and overcoming learners’ internal and external barriers to learning. One of the ways in which I do this is by reframing making mistakes as an important and necessary step on the path of learning, and getting tutees used to having their abilities gently stretched. Additionally, I make a point of getting my tutees to always explain their thought processes when answering questions, encouraging discussion around their learning. As a teacher, nothing gives me more joy than to see the learners in my care growing in confidence and ability, and going on to their future endeavours with a strong sense of self belief."

"I have worked as a private tutor for the past seven years, I have taught pupils from Reception to Year 6. I am familiar with teaching maths, English, science, verbal and non-verbal reasoning and many more subjects across a wide age range. The majority of the children I tutor are preparing for the 11+ examinations. I have a 100% success rate of children getting into their first-choice school. Before I became a tutor I worked as Class Teacher at both Dulwich Prep London and St Hilary’s School, Godalming. I am enthusiastic, hardworking, and driven to find new and exciting ways to inspire children to learn. My experience has taught me the value of providing a stimulating and exciting learning environment where all children are motivated to learn and do their best. My previous students have included a range of children with particular needs, and I have successfully managed to make individual provision for them. My most rewarding successes included working as Class Teacher/SENCO and private tutor to support children with Autism, Asperger’s, ADHD, Global Delay and Cerebral Palsy and communication difficulties. I formed strong bonds with each child and improved their learning whilst working in collaboration with SEN agencies and their parents. All the children I have taught have made considerable progress, getting into their chosen secondary schools and their increased confidence and positive attitude towards learning was clear for all to see."

"After a first career in business, Clive has spent over twenty years working in education. Whilst his main teaching subject has been mathematics, most of his time has been spent in leadership roles ensuring that student outcomes and wellbeing are always at the centre of everything his schools achieve. He has extensive experience both in the UK and overseas, having been a Head of two schools in the UK - Packwood Haugh and Northcote Lodge, and having completed two interim Headships overseas in Egypt and Spain. His knowledge of the prep to senior school transfer process is outstanding and he is very proud of the successful transition of so many of his pupils to their first choice school. He is very well connected within the sector having previously been the Chair of the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS) finance committee and having sat on the Independent Schools Council (ISC) finance committee. His knowledge of the independent school sector, both day and boarding, is extensive. His mix of experience and skills make him a very well rounded consultant who sees the bigger picture. However, he still really enjoys working with individual students to help them achieve their potential and their goals. He has been part of the Dukes team for some years now and is delighted to be supporting the consultancy and tutoring service."
