What is the Grammar School Entrance Process?
The process for entry into Year 7 (also known as 11 Plus entry) takes place in Year 6 when pupils are aged 10–11. Most grammar schools use tests set by either GL Assessment or CEM which assess verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, mathematics, and English comprehension. However, the exact combination varies by school and local authority.
Tests are usually sat in the autumn term of Year 6, with offers released the following March. Because competition for places is fierce, many families begin preparing well in advance (often from Year 4 or 5) making early, structured support from an experienced grammar school entrance exam tutor a significant advantage.
It is occasionally possible to apply for entry to grammar schools in later years, though this depends on the availability of places (usually due to current students leaving). Competition is especially intense as very few places are available.

“I am a Primary Teacher and SENDCo with extensive experience creating inclusive, engaging learning environments where every child feels able to succeed. My teaching philosophy is rooted in supporting autonomy: I want students to feel confident to take ownership of their learning, understand what they are doing and why, and make progress through the right level of challenge and support. I model actively during lessons—demonstrating language, thinking and expected behaviours—then I guide students to practise independently. To consolidate learning, I regularly use “teach back”, encouraging children to explain their reasoning and what they have learned in their own words. When appropriate, I also use play-based approaches to make learning motivating, especially in the younger stages. I have a strong focus on literacy and language development, and I genuinely enjoy inspiring a love of reading. I love selecting books that suit each child’s interests and confidence level, and I have a reputation for helping even the biggest “I don’t like reading” student to find a book they enjoy. I also build confidence through structured preparation, including for competitive entrance exams. I support learners in exam-focused tutoring in a way that goes beyond “teaching to the test”: I ensure children develop firm foundations, effective strategies and deep understanding across 4+, 7+ and 11+ style question types, with adjustments for neurodiversity and SEND where needed.”

“I have been a private tutor for over 10 years, beginning as a volunteer in a local SEN provision and going on to work with children, young people, and families internationally. I specialise in English and the humanities, from the building blocks of reading to A level. I aim to create a participatory learning environment where students take an active role in shaping their sessions. Through discussion and collaboration, I find students retain more knowledge and develop a stronger sense of ownership over their learning. I place a strong emphasis on critical thinking, whilst also building the study and organisational skills vital to academic success. I am experienced in supporting a wide range of learners, from those who struggle with traditional education to those with high academic enthusiasm. My studies in child development and educational psychology have supported me to develop effective teaching methods across diverse needs. I have also spent significant time working with families on residential tutoring placements, which have provided me with a unique opportunity to deepen my understanding of holistic education. I frequently incorporate creative and play‑based activities into my sessions, particularly with younger learners or those who benefit from multisensory, movement‑based, or imaginative approaches. I speak several languages and have taught English as a foreign language, and enjoy supporting students for whom English is an additional language. I believe that building confidence, self-efficacy and self-esteem is just as valuable as learning the curriculum and my students finish our sessions with confidence, direction, and purpose – for exams and beyond!”

“I’ve been tutoring for 6 years, mainly the 11+ process. I’ve had great success by sparking passion in my students, making lessons fun and engaging (even for students who actively express a hatred of the subject!) to encourage them to take ownership of their studies and by developing a friendly, yet firm, rapport. I introduce new topics through demonstration, guided practice, then independent work, checking confidence out of 10 before moving on. My lessons are tailored to each student’s pace and learning style, consolidating core skills while pushing them beyond. I teach all 11+ subjects, including interview technique, with a particular passion for English. As a professional writer in an advertising agency, I bring skills I have learnt professionally, promoting clarity, succinctness, and storytelling, in my teaching.”

“I have worked as a private tutor for the past seven years, I have taught pupils from Reception to Year 6. I am familiar with teaching maths, English, science, verbal and non-verbal reasoning and many more subjects across a wide age range. The majority of the children I tutor are preparing for the 11+ examinations. I have a 100% success rate of children getting into their first-choice school. Before I became a tutor I worked as Class Teacher at both Dulwich Prep London and St Hilary’s School, Godalming. I am enthusiastic, hardworking, and driven to find new and exciting ways to inspire children to learn. My experience has taught me the value of providing a stimulating and exciting learning environment where all children are motivated to learn and do their best. My previous students have included a range of children with particular needs, and I have successfully managed to make individual provision for them. My most rewarding successes included working as Class Teacher/SENCO and private tutor to support children with Autism, Asperger’s, ADHD, Global Delay and Cerebral Palsy and communication difficulties. I formed strong bonds with each child and improved their learning whilst working in collaboration with SEN agencies and their parents. All the children I have taught have made considerable progress, getting into their chosen secondary schools and their increased confidence and positive attitude towards learning was clear for all to see.”

“With 25 years of Primary Teaching experience, plus Montessori Teaching experience I have taught young children how to read and write in English, by using a comprehensive phonics program. I have taught older children creative writing and how to use interesting vocabulary in their work to challenge and extend them further. I enjoy teaching English and Maths as well as other subjects in both KS1 and 2. My lessons are fun and engaging and I will assess how you are progressing and plan lessons accordingly.”

“After a first career in business, Clive has spent over twenty years working in education. Whilst his main teaching subject has been mathematics, most of his time has been spent in leadership roles ensuring that student outcomes and wellbeing are always at the centre of everything his schools achieve. He has extensive experience both in the UK and overseas, having been a Head of two schools in the UK – Packwood Haugh and Northcote Lodge, and having completed two interim Headships overseas in Egypt and Spain. His knowledge of the prep to senior school transfer process is outstanding and he is very proud of the successful transition of so many of his pupils to their first choice school. He is very well connected within the sector having previously been the Chair of the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS) finance committee and having sat on the Independent Schools Council (ISC) finance committee. His knowledge of the independent school sector, both day and boarding, is extensive. His mix of experience and skills make him a very well rounded consultant who sees the bigger picture. However, he still really enjoys working with individual students to help them achieve their potential and their goals. He has been part of the Dukes team for some years now and is delighted to be supporting the consultancy and tutoring service.”

“I am an English Teacher with over 20 years of tutoring experience mainly in the private sector. My teaching approach is a traditional one of using worksheets, practice books and past exam papers. I also use online materials, so my students are kept up to date with their subject knowledge. I encourage my students to have autonomy in their learning by getting them to bring their knowledge of sports, reading, and music into their creative writing tasks. I also help students with language skills by using dictionaries and helping to create their own personal vocabulary notebooks. To monitor their exam progress, I use past exam papers to consolidate the work we have completed and provide the students with revision tasks to increase their overall grades. I have supported students with entrance exams into Latymer, St Pauls and Westminster, as well as many grammar schools.”

“Having worked as a classroom teacher for more than thirty years – including roles as diverse as Head of English, Head of PHSE and Head of Religious Studies. I joined the Dukes Tutoring team as a private tutor more than ten years ago. Over time, my role with Dukes Tutoring expanded and I became the examiner for 11+ English mock exams: this has seen me both writing and marking these exams. I have also run numerous workshops in both English and maths for 7+ and 11+ students. I pride myself on having a 100% success record for my 11+ students being offered a place in one of their schools of choice. Outside of my professional role with Dukes Tutoring, I am a qualified teacher of both ballet and tap dancing and attend classes twice a week. “I have been working in education since 2019 and as a tutor specialising in school entrance exams for over three years. I specialise in all subjects for the 11+, 13+ and Common Entrance exams. In addition, I have a vast amount of experience in assisting younger students in their 7/8+ exams. I have prepared students for a range of competitive schools including St Paul’s, Westminster, Eton, Winchester, Highgate, Latymer Upper, City of London (Boys and Girls) and many more. My tutoring style is rigorous and structured but also holistic, focusing not only on preparing students for exams but in developing them as an individual and critical thinker. I am a keen writer and published my debut collection of short stories, ‘Peace and Quiet and Other Stories’ in October 2025. The leading story of this collection was longlisted for the Yeovil Literary Prize 2014. ”

“I am an experienced and approachable maths tutor with a background in both state and prep schools, specialising in 11+, 13+, and GCSE maths. I began my career in primary education, which helped me develop patience, adaptability, and the skills to support students with a wide range of learning needs. Moving into London prep schools strengthened my subject knowledge and gave me a clear understanding of what competitive entrance exams require. Even after more than a decade as an educator, my approach remains holistic: rather than focusing solely on past papers, I help students build a deep understanding of each topic and develop confidence in problem-solving and reasoning. I have supported students in gaining places at schools such as Alleyn’s, JAGS, Dulwich College, Highgate, and Whitgift. More recently, I have helped several Dukes students secure offers from Westminster, City of London, and Habs, with some receiving scholarships. I have also guided pupils through the Primary Maths Challenge and UKMT, with many achieving Gold Awards and progressing to the Bonus Round. Many families choose to continue lessons beyond exams, as their children enjoy the sessions and make consistent progress. I aim to create a calm, supportive learning environment where every student feels comfortable asking questions, challenging themselves, and growing in confidence.”

“I have taught and tutored Maths and Physics for 15 years and Computer Science for the last five years, working across a wide range of settings from state and independent schools in the UK to British international schools in Spain and Thailand. I believe all students want to succeed, but many simply need guidance with the skills and methods needed to achieve their full potential. This is where my experience as a teacher, former head of department and examiner for two exam boards adds great value to our tutoring sessions. I have also prepared students for entrance exams at 11+, 13+ and 16+ and as an Oxford alumni myself, I have also helped with application and interview preparation for Oxbridge candidates. Outside of teaching and tutoring, I love to travel and have visited over 60 countries, with a few more still on my bucket list!”

“I have been teaching since 2001, solely in the independent sector and spanning across international schools in the Far East, Middle East and Europe, plus independent prep schools and bilingual schools in the UK. My experience totals over 20 years and stretches from early childhood to lower secondary age groups, I have been a private tutor and Governess for the last 8 of those years. I specialise in preparing students for 4+ assessments, 7+ and 11+ entrance exams as well as general primary or KS3 English and EAL support. I am knowledgeable across UK, US and international curricula, with particular expertise in inquiry and concept based learning as a result of my International Baccalaureate Organisation training, as well as early years. My education philosophy is social constructivist and therefore I love most of all to explore humanities and science topics through hands on investigation combined with the Socratic method and supported by Harvard thinking routines to provoke higher order thinking. However, for the four pillars of entrance exam preparation in English, Maths and Reasoning, I structure lessons with the necessary direct instruction followed by joint then independent application. I try to incorporate games where possible to make the learning fun and interactive, and I always start with an initial assessment to ascertain gaps in knowledge or skills before tailoring an individual plan of action to reach set goals. My masters degree specialised in language and literacy as well as child development, and my TEFL training involved a lot of grammatical learning, so I have a solid knowledge of how to grow children’s English skills. In my free time I love to play guitar and keyboard, sing and write songs. My natural flair and passion for creativity has a positive influence on my students creative writing and understanding of poetry. ”

“With over 16 years of experience as both a classroom teacher and one-to-one tutor, I am dedicated to fostering a supportive and trusting learning environment where children feel motivated to pursue their goals and explore their learning potential. It is a privilege to tailor learning to each student’s individual needs, and I take great pride in helping children grow into confident, enthusiastic learners who think independently, work creatively and enjoy the process of problem-solving. I specialise in all subjects for the 11+ and have experience preparing students for the 7+, 8+, and 10+ exams. Over the years, I have guided many children toward securing places at some of the country’s top independent and grammar schools. Outside of teaching, I’m happiest outdoors—be it hiking, camping, or just getting into nature. To unwind, I love a good book or film. ”

“I have been a primary school teacher for over 30 years, working in state schools across London. I ensure my lessons are pacy and involve a range of active learning tasks. I use Project-Based Learning projects to help transform students’ interests into academic excellence and long-term skill development. I empower students through scaffolded instruction by transitioning from direct modelling to independent mastery. I keep students engaged through interactive checkpoints that break down complex topics into manageable chunks. My lessons conclude with an application challenge, turning new knowledge into a skill students can use straight away.”

“I have been tutoring since I was 16, and over the past eight years it has grown into a profession I care deeply about. My experience has spanned tutoring centres such as Explore Learning, classroom based teaching through The Tutor Trust and private 1:1 tuition, preparing students for the 11+ and 13+ entrance exams. Working across these different settings has shaped the way I teach. From Explore Learning, I developed a strong grounding in structured Maths and English tuition, assessment led planning and clear communication with parents. Through The Tutor Trust, I worked within primary and secondary schools, including KS3 and GCSE English, which strengthened my understanding of the national curriculum, classroom dynamics and how to support pupils with different learning needs. Alongside this, I have spent several years specialising in 11+ and 13+ preparation, supporting students applying to a mixture of grammar and independent schools across Surrey, London and Manchester. These include schools such as Epsom College, Eton, Latymer, Marlborough, Queen Elizabeth’s, Tiffin, and Trafford grammar schools, amongst others. Each preparation journey is different, and I tailor my approach carefully depending on the school and the child. ”

“I am an experienced mathematics tutor with over twenty years of teaching across GCSE, iGCSE, A Level, Further Mathematics, a wide range of school entrance exams, and university mathematics admissions tests. I hold a PhD in Mathematics, a PGCE, Advanced Skills Teacher (AST) status, and national leadership qualifications (NPQSL and NPQLTD). I have a strong record of helping students make rapid, often transformational progress, and I specialise in building confidence through clear explanations and a supportive, question-friendly approach. Alongside tutoring, I have recently worked for the DfE-funded Advanced Mathematics Support Programme, where I trained teachers and delivered workshops on university admissions tests, applications and interview preparation. Outside of work, I enjoy time outdoors, especially with my four grown up children who are now at university.”

“I believe that learning should be fun and engaging at its very heart, therefore I place a great importance on getting to know what makes my tutees tick so that I can design lessons which pique their intellectual curiosity and make it fun for them to learn. There are many ways to teach the same concept, and I see it as my role as a tutor to understand what my tutees both want and need, and to create a welcoming and judgement-free zone in which they can flourish. A big part of my teaching practice is building confidence and overcoming learners’ internal and external barriers to learning. One of the ways in which I do this is by reframing making mistakes as an important and necessary step on the path of learning, and getting tutees used to having their abilities gently stretched. Additionally, I make a point of getting my tutees to always explain their thought processes when answering questions, encouraging discussion around their learning. As a teacher, nothing gives me more joy than to see the learners in my care growing in confidence and ability, and going on to their future endeavours with a strong sense of self belief.”

“I have always loved maths, and I bring that enthusiasm into every lesson. My approach is flexible, as each student has their own unique personality, preferred learning style, strengths, and areas for improvement. That said, maths is ultimately a practical subject. Unlike many other subjects, it cannot be mastered through rote learning and book work alone. It is essential that students practise applying concepts and methods across a wide range of problem-solving situations. In addition to learning the methods themselves, students must also develop an intuition for when and how to use them, particularly in the more unorthodox situations that can arise in examination questions. As such, my default approach is to place a strong emphasis on past paper and exam-style questions, while giving students the opportunity to attempt problems independently before I step in with guidance and advice. When gaps in a student’s understanding become apparent, I engage in deeper work on the relevant material in order to strengthen their understanding before returning to question practice. I also emphasise the importance of good exam technique and time management. Above all, I ensure that lessons remain supportive and encouraging, so that students feel comfortable asking questions and fully engaging with the learning process. ”

“I have extensive experience in education having taught for over 25 years as a class teacher, Assistant Head and Deputy Head Teacher in outstanding primary schools in Norfolk, London and Cheshire. Also, I was Head of Schools, Head of Learning and Head of Dukes Tutoring; however, I now focus solely on tutoring. I am meticulous and take pride in creating structured lessons to match each of my student’s potential. Lesson feedback is both thorough and personal, inspiring students to meet achievable goals, involving them in setting their own academic targets. I am enthusiastic and highly committed, building professional relationships with my students and their families. I also act as an education consultant for Dukes Tutoring, conducting many academic assessment reviews and guidance, as well as interview preparation for secondary schools. Music is my passion, and I am a skilled pianist, a keen songwriter and a member of a local community choir. I love both attending and performing in concerts as well as regular trips to the theatre.”

FAQs
We offer in-person tutoring in London and online lessons anywhere in the world. So, no matter where you are based, we can help.
Regardless of whether you opt for in-person or online tutoring, we will carefully match your child to a tutor with a compatible personality and experience in their learning style. Our experience shows that this is critical to your child’s success, as the right tutor will become a trusted mentor throughout your child’s entire grammar school entrance journey.
Our tutors are carefully selected, high-calibre teachers who are knowledgeable, talented and enthusiastic about helping students achieve their best.
At Dukes Tutoring, we carefully match every child to a specialist tutor based on their learning style, personality, and the specific grammar school they are hoping to attend. Our tutors are rigorously selected and trained in 11+ techniques, so you can be confident your child is in expert hands throughout the process.
We recommend having your child assessed in Year 4 with one of our academic assessments to establish whether grammar school is the right path for them. If you decide to go ahead, tutoring can begin at that point or early in Year 5, giving your child a full year of structured preparation. If you have less time available, we can still offer a more condensed programme of tuition to enhance their chances of success.
Sitting mock exams is one of the final but vital stages of our grammar school entrance exam preparation for students. Our 11+ mock exams only occur when tutors have covered the full curriculum with their students to ensure they are fully prepared and have all the necessary knowledge. They provide a realistic insight into what will happen on the day of your grammar school entrance exam under strictly timed exam conditions. Plus, detailed mock exam feedback ensures that the final stages of grammar school entrance exam tutoring focus on the key areas that need improvement.
As sitting an exam under timed conditions can be a relatively new experience for this age group, we recommend students complete practice papers this way with your support and guidance. Our grammar school entrance exam tutors will seek to provide age-specific 11+ Mock Exams.
We strongly recommend an academic assessment before your child sets their sights on a grammar school place. This helps establish whether they have the aptitude and drive to thrive in a selective, competitive environment. At Dukes Tutoring, we believe in honest advice: our goal is to find the right path for each child, not simply to tutor every child towards an exam they may not be suited for.
