"I believe that learning should be fun and engaging at its very heart, therefore I place a great importance on getting to know what makes my tutees tick so that I can design lessons which pique their intellectual curiosity and make it fun for them to learn. There are many ways to teach the same concept, and I see it as my role as a tutor to understand what my tutees both want and need, and to create a welcoming and judgement-free zone in which they can flourish. A big part of my teaching practice is building confidence and overcoming learners’ internal and external barriers to learning. One of the ways in which I do this is by reframing making mistakes as an important and necessary step on the path of learning, and getting tutees used to having their abilities gently stretched. Additionally, I make a point of getting my tutees to always explain their thought processes when answering questions, encouraging discussion around their learning. As a teacher, nothing gives me more joy than to see the learners in my care growing in confidence and ability, and going on to their future endeavours with a strong sense of self belief."

"I have worked as a private tutor for the past seven years, I have taught pupils from Reception to Year 6. I am familiar with teaching Mathematics, English, Science, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning and many more subjects across a wide age range. The majority of the children I tutor are preparing for the 11+ examinations. I have a 100% success rate of children getting into their first-choice school. Before I became a tutor I worked as Class Teacher at both Dulwich Prep London and St Hilary’s School, Godalming. I am enthusiastic, hardworking, and driven to find new and exciting ways to inspire children to learn. My experience has taught me the value of providing a stimulating and exciting learning environment where all children are motivated to learn and do their best. My previous students have included a range of children with particular needs, and I have successfully managed to make individual provision for them. My most rewarding successes included working as Class Teacher/SENCO and private tutor to support children with Autism, Asperger’s, ADHD, Global Delay and Cerebral Palsy and communication difficulties. I formed strong bonds with each child and improved their learning whilst working in collaboration with SEN agencies and their parents. All the children I have taught have made considerable progress, getting into their chosen secondary schools and their increased confidence and positive attitude towards learning was clear for all to see."

"This should be in first person - use this space to ask the tutor to describe themselves, their teaching approach/philosophy. For example: I have been a primary school teacher for over 10 years, with experience mainly in the private sector. I like my lessons to feel inclusive, ensuring that the student takes autonomy in their learning. I often participate in the activity that I set my students, modelling language and behaviour to demonstrate what is expected. To consolidate learning, I also ask the student to teach back what they have learnt to me and use play based learning. I teach all four of the core 11+ subjects, with a particular passion in English. I am always reading new books and am happy to recommend books for your child - I have been known to get even the biggest 'I don't like reading' student into reading! "

"Having worked as a classroom teacher for more than thirty years – including roles as diverse as Head of English, Head of PHSE and Head of Religious Studies. I joined the Dukes Tutoring team as a private tutor more than ten years ago. Over time, my role with Dukes Tutoring expanded and I became the examiner for 11+ English mock exams: this has seen me both writing and marking these exams. I have also run numerous workshops in both English and maths for 7+ and 11+ students. I pride myself on having a 100% success record for my 11+ students being offered a place in one of their schools of choice. "I have extensive experience in education having taught for over 25 years as a class teacher, Assistant Head and Deputy Head Teacher in outstanding primary schools in Norfolk, London and Cheshire. Also, I was Head of Schools, Head of Learning and Head of Dukes Tutoring; however, I now focus solely on tutoring. I am meticulous and take pride in creating structured lessons to match each of my student’s potential. Lesson feedback is both thorough and personal, inspiring students to meet achievable goals, involving them in setting their own academic targets. I am enthusiastic and highly committed, building professional relationships with my students and their families. I also act as an education consultant for Dukes Tutoring, conducting many academic assessment reviews and guidance, as well as interview preparation for secondary schools. Music is my passion, and I am a skilled pianist, a keen songwriter and a member of a local community choir. I love both attending and performing in concerts as well as regular trips to the theatre."
